Salem Beautification Committee
Meeting April 17, 2012
Minutes

Present: Marcia Lambert, Mary Ellen Halliwell, Bev Moustakis, Maryanne Piechocki. Sandra Power, Ellen Talkowsky, Judith Wolfe.   Absent: Sam Fiore. Visitor:  Lisa Lyons
Meeting was called to order at 7:33 P.M.

1.   The Minutes of the Meeting of 2/28/2012 were approved as written

2.   Lady of Salem Update:  Mary Ellen reported that there are nine new sponsors including Home Depot, Tavern on the Square, Treasures Over Time, Witch Way Gifts, Beverly Cooperative Bank, Scratch Kitchen, Salem Body and Soul and Cabot Management.  Home Depot has agreed to provide the supply needs of the artists.      
      The project is being supported by the grant Maryanne obtained and by Sponsorship fees ranging from $250.00 to $500.00.  Artists are to receive a stipend of $50.00 per Sprite.
    Maryanne is working with a Web designer on the  development of a site that will link videos and will have with connections to Facebook and Twitter.
     The project will need funding, a brochure with map, plus prizes for the winning “Ladies.”
      The figures are to be on display from June to October.  Votes for the “Ladies are to be cast by ballot and on the Web.
      A motion to authorize the expenditure of $500.00 for “startup” costs for the project was made, seconded and passed.


3.   Clean Sweeps (May 5th):  Notices have been sent to neighborhood organizations and to the Schools.  There have been some responses. Packets of information are to be prepared for team leaders.  Home Depot, through Sam, will augment existing equipment by providing additional brooms and other supplies.  Bev Maryanne and Ellen will coordinate these activities.
     On the day of the event, there will be a Committee table on the Common. Team leaders will pick up the information packets and supplies there.  Those who are looking for cleanup sites will be directed to the Mall where volunteer signup stations will be located.  
       The Pedestrian Mall will be the focus of major cleanup and planting area improvements.  Sandi will consult with Northeast Nursery.  There will be a Mad Vac Sweeper available.
     Volunteers will be given tickets for a pizza party lunch on the Common.  Pizza is to be provided by Engine House Pizza plus treats provided by Rita’s Water Ice.  The party is expected to begin about 11:45 A.M.  A singing group will entertain with recycling songs.  Rain date will be Sunday.  

4.   Plant Sale: This Committee fund raiser plant sale is scheduled for May 19th and will be held at Derby Square plaza on Front Street in conjunction with the Living Green Fair to be held at the Old Town Hall on the same day.  Discussion focused on methods of advertising the event and in encouraging the contribution of plants from local gardens and other sources. There will be flyers for distribution and notices sent to the Neighborhood Associations, a Letter to the Editor of the Salem news will be drafted by Sandi  plus notices posted online.  Maryanne will put together a planted flower box which will be a raffled highlight.

A motion to adjourn was proposed and allowed.
